Error in Outlook says Outlook is incompatable with installed version of
Microsoft Word (I have Word 2000 and Outlook 2003) ... for the purpose of
mail merging contact lists.

Correct.  Outlook and Office versions have always had to match for automation functions to work.  Not an error.

After furious head scratching, StepOne asked:

So, is my only option to go out and purchase word 2003, so that the funtions
work between the two programs?
