E-Mail Doesn't recognise my distribution list.

Hi All,
I've created a distribution list following the steps on the Help in Outlook
(2002). It all looks fine with the e-mail addresses I want being in the list
ok.

When I come to send mail to it, following the instructions on the Help, it
simply inserts the name of the DL in the To field, and therefore outlook
doesn't recognise this as an address.

Any thoughts on where I'm going wrong?

Does the DL name become underlined when you press CTRL-K?

No; It brings up the same error message as when I try to send it: -

Microsoft Outlook does not recognise "DL Name".
   Would you like to:
Create New address for "DL Name"
   Change to: (No Suggestions)

Cheers
Darren

So, let me summarize to make sure I understand.

1) You created a DL in your default Contacts folder
2) The DL looks complete when viewed in that folder.
3) When composing a new message and clicking To: you can see and select the
DL
but it does not become underlined in the To field and typing the DL in the
To line and
pressing CTRL-K does not cause it to become underlined.

Is this summary correct?

Hi Brian,

I've found out something. Check the reply I've put on regarding my Personal
Address book. Can you help?

The problem appears to be that the distribution list was created in my
contacts folder, but it is not in my personal address book, but I can't seem
to get it to go into my personal address book.

Looking on troubleshoot address book says that I'll need to create a new
contact in my personal address book. There must be another way round
re-creating my DL from scratch, surely??

The Personal Address Book service is long obsolete and tyou shouldn't be
using it.  The Contacts folder supercedes the PAB.

Thanks Brian,

Sorry, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to using Contacts/Distributions
lists (clearly!) I have been creating my distribution lists in my contacts
folder, and the only way I've got them to work is to create them in a
personal address book! That would suit me, but that then means I have trouble
when sending to colleagues...

On a related note, when I use the address book functions (like clicking
To,Cc etc), using the "View Names from" drop-down, I can select "Personal
Address Book", but not "Contacts". I have a colleague here who can do
vice-versa.

Do I need to change my settings somewhere?

Why would it mean that?  It shouldn't.  The way to create a new DL is with
File>New DIstribution List.  After constructing the list, click Save and
Close and it will be entered in your default Contacts folder.

Do you have the Outlook Address Book service configured in your mail
profile?  CLick Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories or
address books>Next.  Do you see "Outlook Address Book"?

Cheers Brian,

Thanks for all your help with this. I think we've sussed it. E-Mail Accounts
shows an address book called 'Personal Address Book' rather than 'Outlook
Address Book'. I've since spoke to our company IT department, who have
advised that any requests for distribution lists must go through them, so
presumably this option has been disabled.

I've found a way round it, by creating a personal distribution list (in
personal address book instead of contacts), but there's been no way of
sending it to others or to create it directly in contacts.

Thanks for all your help again, Brian.
