I've selected first name to be listed first, but outlook (2003) continues to
create new contacts, listed as last name then first name.
How do I make this work properly?

Thank you.

You failed to specify your view and how it is sorted.
You failed to specify the field to which you are referring.

Business Card view, sorted alphabetically.
The field is the "file as" view.  I've told Outlook to list as first name
(first) and last name (last).
Does that help.
Thanks Russ.

Not much. Outlook 2003 doesn't have a Business Card view. Only Outlook 2007
does.
I assumed the sort was alphabetical. I was asking on which field the view in
question is configured to sort.
When you specify a format for the "File As" or "Full Name" field, that will
apply only to new Contacts, not existing ones.

My mistake ... the view is Address Cards.

That view sorts by default on the File As... field. So I suspect it is doing
exactly what you've told it to.

I've told it first name (first), but when I create a new contact, it
defaults to the last name first.  I have to reselect from the pulldown, to
display as first name, then last name.  It's an unfortunate work around.

That view sorts by default on the File As... field. So I suspect it is doing
exactly what you've told it to.

In which field? Sounds to me like you aren't specifying the right format for
the right field. If you specify the correct format for the File As... field
and if that view sorts by the File As... field, Outlook will sort the way
you want.

Thanks for your responses.

I'll try to explain it differently, cuz I don't think I'm being clear enough
for you to help and I apologize for that.

It sorts just fine, however, it doesn't display every contacts as determined
by the default settings - which causes me to have problems finding some
records.

I've told outlook contacts to display as firstname [field] (first), then
lastname [field] last.  I save it ... then can't find it ... cuz it's listed
as the lastname (first) instead.  So ... I go back into the record, the file
as drop down [field], and select the actual first, then last name as my
choice.  Then it works fine.  I'm mystified as to why I have to do this to
each record.

Hope the above helps.  If not ... maybe my outlook is simply misbehaving.
Thanks for your efforts Russ.

Here's the part you haven't clarified: "I've told outlook contacts to
display as firstname [field] (first), then
lastname [field]"
There is no such setting. You can set a field to that format, but not a
Contact.
You need to clarify what settings you specified and in what view Contacts
are not displaying the way you think they should.

Ok ... when I get home ... I'll work on that.   Apologies if my lack of
clarity is wasting your time ... I do appreciate your help, so I'll see what
I come up with.  Thanks.  I'll see if the newsgroup will let me send a print
screen of the setting and the subsequent display (I'll send as a single
grouped item to keep the attachment small).

There is no such setting. You can set a field to that format, but not a

You need to realize that each view of the Contacts Folder will sort on a
different field. If you just specify which view you are referring to and how
you set the format of the field on which that view sorts, we can figure out
the rest.
