We have no idea what solution you tried. The one that works is the one that
is posted here daily.
It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to “lose track” of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following steps to reset
the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove
the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and
then re-add it before you can get it to work.
Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book checked?
If this is grayed out...Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change
existing directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present?
If it isn't listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed,
then remove it and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add
it.

Dear Russ,
Thanks for your quick response.
What you proposed did not work for me this time either.
I deleted the listed Personal address list and then added it again, still
without success: in Outlook the select names window called Message recipients
still had the To:, CC: and Bcc. all grayed out.
It seems that in Outlook I do have a few folders too many. Hereby the list:
Personal Folders - This seems to be the active one
Archive Folders - In complete, contains only Sent Items upo to 6/9/2006
Archive folders - Contains some subfolders: all empty
Archive folders - Contains some subfolders: all empty
Archive folders - Contains some subfolders: all empty
Personal folders - Only the Sub folders Deleted items and Search folders,
both empty.
Personal folders - Seems to be full copy of the Personal folders at the top
of the list.
How do I find out which Personal folders contains my existing Contacts?
And how can I move the correct Personal folders into Outlook?
Regards,

I have no idea what you mean by "Personal address list." That term has no
meaning in Outlook's context.
You'll need to provide a more accurate and complete description of your
problem and what you did. You are now seemingly describing a completely
unrelated issue when you say your To, CC and BCC fields are "grayed out."
Clarify your post.

Russ,
1. Please read "Personal address book" for "Personal address list" in my
previous message. The action I conducted referred to: Tools -> e-mail
accounts -> Choose View or exchange exsiting directories or address book.
Here I failed to reinstall the correct Personal address book. The correct
Personal address book must be present on my computer because I can open it in
"Contacts".(Here I presume that the listing of addresses under Contacts, is
identical to the Personal address book used for finding e-mail addresses.)
2. Apologies that I went too quick with the "greyed out" issue. Here I refer
to when I start a new message in Outlook and try to enter the recipients in
the window "Mail recipients".
If my previous explanation is still not sufficiently clear, please come back.
And if all is now clear, please try to respond to my previous 2 questions.
Thanks,

Outlook has not used a PAB for years. You should be using the Outlook
Address Book. Reread the instructions I posted and follow them carefully.
Nowhere will you see "Personal Address Book."

Russ,
The problem has been solved.
I removed under tools -> E-mail accounts -> View or change existing
directories or address books, the entry "Personal Address book" and left only
"Outlook Address book".
After restarting Outlook, I now have access to my Outlook addresses when
composing an message.
Thanks for your assistance,
