MS Office Forum / Outlook / Contacts / September 2007Problem with Outlook XP and MS Windows address books
I assume the two address books are somehow tied together. I say that because the autocomplete TO field is pulling addresses from somewhere other than my Outlook XP address book. Or after reading some info maybe the file that stores typed addresses (forgot it's extension) is causing the inappropriate autocomplete addresses? A second issue is after having had outlook, outlook express, and netscape (many years ago) imported manes and addresses is causing the following names formats in the MS Windows address book listings: John Jones "John Jones' mail=johnjones@abcde.com Can someone help me with these tow issues so I can finally clean up my address book(s)? It's remembering those addresses to which you've sent mail before. With Outlook closed, you can delete that file and your entire autocompletion cache will start over. SignatureBrian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] I'll delete the NK2 file and that should get rid of the ones I didn't recognize. Probably used years ago. And as for the MS Windows address book problem, I'll try and find a group that may be able to help me with that. But there is one more question related to the Outlook Contacts? (If someone thinks I should create a new thread just tell me to do so) There are two boxes in the tools\options\email options\advanced email options - "automac name checking" and "suggest names while completing To, cc,and bcc fields". Which one of those is supposed to (after typing some (three I think) letters in the address TO field) is supposed to be helping me to fill in or select the name I may be wanting from my contacts (outlook address book) list? For example I create a new contact with a name and an email address. Tthen go to start an email to them and in the TO filed, start typing thier name. Shouldn't outlook be suggesting a name or filing in the block? I understand that if I continue typeing it will override the suggestion from outlook. But I'm not getting anything to populate for the new contact. Any sugggestions? See Russ Valentine's explanation of the differences between autoresolution and autocompletion: http://home.indy.rr.com/russval/autocompletion.htm . Autoresolution requires three characters and does reference the Contacts folder via the Address Book service. Autocompletion presents previously resolved addresses as soon as you begin typing in a recipient field and references the NK2 file. SignatureBrian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] OK, deleted my NK2 file, opened and closed outlook and an new NK2 file was created. Thanks - that will help alot! However, from what Russ Valentine's explanation said, outlook shoud be looking at my contacts list but I don't think it is.After I enter a couple of letters, I have to click on the "check names icon" to select a suggested name from my address book. Oh well, it is much better than it was before and that is near what I wanted. I have more questions about Outlook contacs groups/lists, but will ask them in a mor appropriate thread. If autoresolution is on and you tab out of the field, an automatic "check names" is performed. This employs the Address Book service to examine your contacts. If the name can be resolved to an address, Outlook will fill it in fully and underline it. If it cannot resolve it uniquely, but it matched more than one entry, it will be underline with a red squiggle which you can right-click and get the list of possible matches. If Outlook can't match it at all, it won't change, but when you try to send, Outlook will ask you for an address SignatureBrian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] I do understand now and will work with it.
