I've tried to just click on the header category (i.e. "Friends") in my
category list and then go to New message to contact (under File).  But in the
"to" box it doesn't let me type the word "Friends" and if I just leave it
blank, it asks for a name to send to.  It looks like I'm supposed to type
just one person's name in rather than a category of people's names?

Display your Contacts in the By Category table view.  Select the category
and click Actions>New Message to Contact

New Message to Contact is in the Actions Menu, not the File menu.

Either way doesn't work.  When I want to write a "new message" the blank
"to" box comes up and it won't let me type a category in it, only individual
names?

Okay, I get it - I had to display the category first and select the header
and then go to Actions, new message to contact.  Thanks.
