missing/ hidden contacts outlook 2000 sp3

Hello,

One of our users has a windows 2000 machine with outlook 2000 sp3 installed.
When he goes into new message and selects 'to' then selects contacts his
contacts are not visible.  They are visible when looking directly into
contacts but not when selecting from a new email , or any kind of email

I have un-installed/ re-installed.  Exported contacts/ imported contacts.
Checked and un-checked the address book in contacts properties.  Strangely it
works when i log on to the machine with my profile.  I am an administrator so
I even gave him local admin rights but still no luck

I (we) have tried everything we can think of but no joy so far

Can any of you Outlook wizards help?!

Thanks

G

Hi Goldie,

1st. Select the Contact folder where the contacts are stored.

right mouseclick => Outlook Addressbook > is the flag for "use this folder
as Outlook Addressbook" activated?

If not, activate it and give this Addressbook the name "Actual Contacts".

If it is activated, change also the name to "Actual Contacts".

Now go in Outlook under "Tools/Addressbook/Tools Options" and select for:

Show this Addressbook first" =>  "Actual Contacts".

Close Outlook, restart Outlook, create a new E-mail and click on "To".

Does this fix the problem?

Hi Oliver, thanks for the reply

Unfortunately no it doesn't work.  I've tried renaming the contacts and
moving the shown first option too

I'm starting to think it's something to do with his roaming profile because
I've just tried his profile on 2 other PCs and i get the same thing.  But if
i log on to those machines with a different profile outlook works ok.  Thing
is tho - i already tried creating a completely new profile before and the
problem still happened.  I wonder if something on his pc is messing up his
profile? Weird...

Dear Goldie,

my answer was the default answer for:

"Contact information does not appear in the address book in Outlook"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287563&Product=ol2002

If your probem is based on an error in your roaming profile I have no idea
how to fix that, sorry.

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to “lose track” of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or change your data store or
update your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following steps to
reset the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually have to
remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook,
and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

Hi Russ thanks for the reply

I have tried completely removing the MAPI profile and recreating it.  And
just removing the address book and adding it again - or renaming it.  I've
even re-installed outlook on the machina and re-applied the service packs

I think it is profile related - thing is I cretaed a completely new profile
for the user and the same thing happened.  What do you think?

State the steps you used to create the new profile. Why did you export and
import Contacts? You may have corrupted the email addresses by doing so, in
which case they would no longer appear in the address book.

With outlook closed - go into control panel > mail > profiles > remove

Open outlook > create new profile > check address book settings are correct

check contacts > yes they are there

create new mail > to field > contacts > not visible...

I exported the contacts to a .pst and imported them again because I thought
that it could be the cause of the problem.  Even if I start completely afresh
with out any contacts and create a new contact the same thing happens

Any thoughts on it being his profile?

cheers

Are you sure the profile is completely unique? Have you checked to make sure
the electronic addresses are resolved? If so, then this is more likely an
issue with Exchange than Outlook.

The global address list is resolved fine - it is just his contacts stored in
outlook that aren't visible.  All other users are fine (about 100).  We've
never seen this happen before

Even if I turn off his roaming profile in AD > move and rename his local
profile > log off > log on again > so completely new windows profile for the
user > open outlook again > create the MAPI profile > it still happens!

Totally confused... :/

By "stored in Outlook" I assume you mean the Exchange mailbox, right? The
fact that you are using roaming profiles and a version of Outlook that may
not be fully compatible with your version of Exchange adds other variables.
The solution I posted has always worked when the issue is confined to
Outlook.

Sorry yes I mean the exchange mailbox.  It's Exchange 2003 sp2

I think I'll re-create his windows profile again...

Thanks for your help Russ
