Using Outlook 2003, when I export to a windows csv file, some first last
names are exported as last, first.  Looking at these contacts in Outlook, the
fields are the same for the correct entries and those that get reversed.  Any
ideas why this happens?  Thanks!

Of course. Have you not been paying attention? Derived fields do not survive
exporting and importing, especially when you change file formats. They never
have. Why are you compelled to use this method?

Russ, thanks for your quick reply.  No, I haven't been paying attention.
Please suggest a better way to export/import.  I'm trying to copy contacts to
Windows Mail on Vista laptop.

Clarify your post. Windows Mail does not use the same derived fields as
Outlook.

Importing the csv file into Vista Windows Mail was successful and the
contacts are okay to use.  My real question concerns the exported csv file.
I exported "name" and "email address".  Name in all the contacts in Outlook
is firstname/lastname order.  About half of the names exported to the csv
file are firstname/lastname and the rest are lastname, firstname.  In
addition, 845 entries in the contact folder resulted in over a thousand lines
in the csv file.  Thanks again for the help.

Look at how Outlook parsed the individual name elements (not the derived
fields). Make sure you mapped those name element fields accordingly.
