I have 6 large distribution lists.  Many people are in some or all of the
lists.  I wish to create one list which includes them all, but without
duplicates.  Can I do that without checking each name?

No. Nor would you be wise to do so. DL's are a poor choice for more than
just a few recipients if you actually expect to send a message.

You can try nesting the DL's, but I still suspect you'll exceed your servers
limits if you do.
