drag and drop distribution lists

m stroup - 14 Jan 2008 17:15 GMT I would like to be able to update my distribution list and send this to those I support and have them update/replace their former version of the list (with the same name) by dragging/dropping. Right now, it just adds another distribution list with the same name. Any suggestions?

There is no setting that will cause it to replace an existing DL when you add another of the same name. The person should delete the old one first, then add the new one.

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 16 Jan 2008 18:34 GMT yes, I use this option. But sorry, just trying to help.... ... maybe I got the scenario wrong that was described in the posting ?

I've created distribution lists having the same name many times. I always have the option you descibe enabled. I just tried it again. Dragging a DL into a contact folder that already contains a DL if the same name did not warn me of the duplicate. I tried it with a real contact as well. No warnings.

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 17 Jan 2008 01:33 GMT That was not exactly what I was suggesting. But once again, maybe I don't understand what you guys are trying to accomplish. The way I would do it, is enable the check-dupes-option, create a temporary folder, import the contacts and the DL there (or sending them there as "m stroup" wants). Then copying the more-up-to- date contacts into the same folder and in the "duplicate contact detected"-pop-up-window that appears, you click on "update all". Then you open the DL and click on "update now". Afterwards I guess you can delete the contacts in the temp folder. Now you send the updated list back to the sender.
I guess, that comes in quite handy if the DL is based on any easy criteria, for example the same company or the same category, because selecting the appropriate contacts is quite easy then. Otherwise you have to select the contacts for the DL one by one, but that is one of the shortcomings of DLs as we all know.
I am sure I don't tell you anything new here, that's why - in the first place - I just jumped in with side note referring to that dupe- checking-option.

"Drag and drop" is stated specifically in the original post. You're talking about import and export. I think you missed the requirements the OP stated at the beginning. Importing can warn you of duplicates. Drag and drop, being the context the original question stated, does not, as far as I can tell, so your simplistic answer that assumed conditions outside of the initial conditions without stating those conditions, was wrong. If you had said, "if you enable the 'check duplicates' option and use export and import, it might work," then perhaps your suggestion would have been applicable.

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 17 Jan 2008 15:19 GMT Maybe the OP wants to jump in and say if it's useful for him or not. Maybe I didn't fully grasp what you guys are trying to achieve, but I already said, there is no point in repeating that all over again, Brian, I was only trying to help.
And I'm not sure if you understood what I meant either. And besides you are word picking, because firstly (1) I said "importing" and specified explicitely that you can replace the term by "sending" as the OP did and - more importantly - secondly (2) drag and drop is also the key process in my instructions, so where is the problem ??
To make it clear: Person A sends his contacts and DL to person B who receives them and puts them in a temp folder (that's what I meant by "importing", but you can also say receive/send for that matter as the OP did.
For the rest, please refer to my last post. Thanks.

Here's the sum total of your original post:
tools>options>contact options>check for duplicate contacts
Now, you tell me where in that post it says anything about "import" or "sending".

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 17 Jan 2008 23:57 GMT OP=original post(er), that does refer to "m stroup", not to any of my posts. You should now that.

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 17 Jan 2008 15:23 GMT PS: Have you bothered trying before posting, Brian? Because if you did, you would have noticed that drag and drop, DOES warn you if there are dupes and lets you update them. I specifically stated that this only happens if you copy contacts into the temp folder, not a DL. Please read the post again, before you come up with some unjustified criticism.

Have you bothered reading before posting? I'll repeat what I already said:
"I just tried it again. Dragging a DL into a contact folder that already contains a DL if the same name did not warn me of the duplicate. I tried it with a real contact as well. No warnings."
So, yes, I TESTED it before posting.

amaury.entaleaume@gmx.net - 18 Jan 2008 00:00 GMT Ok, than your Outlook installation is broken.
I repeat: That was not exactly what I was suggesting. But once again, maybe I don't understand what you guys are trying to accomplish.
