Preventing Contacts removed from Outlook address book from     re-appearing

I have removed many old contacts from my Outlook address book but they
continue to pop up on auto-fill when I'm trying to type in a similar
name  even though they no longer appear in the address book.  For
example, I may have removed "Fred Smith" from my address book months
ago and have not typed in his name since then.  However, when I begin
to type in "Fred Jones" for an e-mail address, "Fred Smith"
automatically pops up as soon as I complete "Fred".

This gets worse as time goes on since more and more older entries
continue to appear when similar names or entered.  WHERE DO THESE
DELETED CONTACTS COME FROM IF THEY ARE NO LONGER IN MY ADDRESS BOOK
AND HOW DO I PERMANENTLY GET RID OF THEM??

Thanks for any help on this as I have been trying to find a solution
for several years.

When a dis-used contact pops up in the autofill drop-down box, use the arrow
keys to highlight it, and press "delete"...

Never delete contacts using the Address Book interface.  Always delete them
from your Contacts folder.

Gordon answered this.
