I'm new to Outlook (2003) and am trying to understand the use and purpose of
the Nickname field on the Contact Detail tab.

I assumed (ha!) that any value in here would be recognized and be
substituted by the associated email address when I do Ctrl-K in an email,
but that doesn't work.

Outlook help is anything but on the subject, and my Outlook 2003 book by
Bill Mann doesn't mention the Detail tab at all.

Any help would be much appreciated.

they don't really do anything... at one time long ago they sometimes worked
as you expected... you can try resolving the address to the right contact
and the nickname might resolve.
