I have setup in my contacts folder "Categories", I click
on the little plus sign to the left of the category to
expand it to see my contacts in that category. Problem is
when I go to send an email and click on To: and drop the
windows down to "Contacts" I get an error "The contacts
associated with this address list could not be opened,
you may have moved it or deleted it, or you do not have
permissions. On the properties of Contacts - Outlook
Address Book - I do the box checked "show this folder as
an email address book"

Only thing I can think is it's because the Contact folder
contains Categories (with contacts in them). Is there a
setting that would make the contacts within the
categories, show up when sending an email and selecting
To: and dropping down the windows to Contact... thank you

You have 2 (or more) separate issues here.
First, the Outlook Address book cannot be sorted by category, so you won't
end up with what you want.
Second, the Contacts Folder listed in your Outlook Address Book "Show Names"
dropdown is not the correct one. You must reset the Outlook Address Book to
display the correct one. Do so here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

thanks, Russ.. but what will this do for me
exactly "display the correct one. Do so here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing
directories or address books > Outlook Address Book >
Change."

It will allow you to view your Contacts in the Outlook Address Book, which
you said you can no longer do.

Russ, the only other option in view or change Outlook
Address book, was File as Last, first. I tried it but
still when I go to send an email and select To: and use
the drop down windows and select contacts, I don't see
any of the contacts from within the categories in
contacts.

You're losing me now. I was addressing the error message you said you were
getting whenever you tried to view your Contacts in the Outlook Address
Book:
"The contacts associated with this address list could not be opened,
you may have moved it or deleted it, or you do not have
permissions..."

I already told you that the Outlook Address Book cannot be sorted by
Category, if that's what you were expecting to do. I get the feeling I'm
still not understanding your question.

Sorry, what I am seeing now is when I am sending an
email, and select To: and use the drop down windows, and
go from Global address to Contacts, there is nothing
there. It is blank. Although I do have selected for the
properties of contacts folder Outlook Address Book "Show
this folder as an email folder". Just a quick reminder,
in my contacts folder are contacts and they are all
placed in different categories. So if you were to select
contacts and View, by categories you would see all the
categories, but back to the issue, you can not see any
email address when creating an email and selecting To:
and using the drop down window and going to contacts.

Sorry if am not making sense. must be the holidays.

Then the Contacts Folder listed in your Outlook Address Book is the wrong
one and not the one that actually contains your Contacts.

Remove the Outlook Address Book Service entirely. Restart Outlook. Re-add
the Outlook Address Book Service, then click on Change... to add the
Contacts Folder. Any Contacts Folder that you have enabled as an e-mail
address book will be available to add at that time. Do so. Restart Outlook
again.

Categories can be used to sort a view of the Contacts Folder, but not a view
of the Outlook Address Book.
