Phone Number Format

At one time I was able to enter a phone number into contacts using a period between area code and the number instead of parenthesis around area code.  I was also able to enter a period instead of a dash within the 7 digits.  Can you tell me what settings to change?

Not under user control. Masking of a phone number is hard coded.
