What is the exact return error? Are you in a corporate environment or "stand
alone"?

I have the same problem with certain addresses.  It is as if I need to send and receive, then re-send.  I hope you find the solution.  Mine is when I have some incoming mail that is being received at the same time I am trying to send the mail to hotmail.  It is like the computer gets confused and can't do both tasks.
