I have Outlook 2003.  My friend has Outlook 2002.  I export my contacts to a
file and then when I try to import them into his Outlook 2002 it says
"cannot recognize the file format".  How do I save my 2003 contacts in a
2002 format?

Create a new PST file in Outlook 97-2002 format with the File | New |
Outlook Data File command, then export to that file.

Do not export. Instead, create a new PST file in the old format and copy
your Contacts into it.
