I created a new distribution list from my contacts in
Outlook 2002. Rather than duplicating the contacts, it
removed them from my master contacts file. How do I most
easily put copies of the contacts back in my master
contacts file? How do I create a distribution list
properly next time?

Start at the beginning. How did you create a DL in such a way as to delete
the Contacts from your Contacts Folder?
Outlook does not do that.
