Removing old email addresses from "To"

I would sure appreciate anyone who could tell me how to remove email addresses that I only wrote to once.  When I start to address an email on the "To:" line........I get every person i ever wrote beginning with that first initial..........ie: when i type "D", i get all the email addresses for anyone i ever wrote whose email address began with "D"...............HELP! please

Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight each unwanted addr4ess, then
press Delete.
