I'm trying to get my Outlook inbox and contacts from
Outlook 98 into Outlook 2003 for Windows 98.

Here's the situation: My hard drive had to be replaced and
the repair person backed up all my files to a backup
folder.  After the new hard drive was installed, I
installed MS Office 2003 for Windows 98.  The installation
process did not see my old Outlook files and so my inbox
and contacts are empty.  Which backup files should I copy
and rename in order to access my old inbox and contacts in
Outlook 2003?  What are the destination folders and
filenames?

In my backup folder, I found outlook.nc_ in the "Local
Settings/Applic Data/MS/Outlook" folder.  This file is
large and appears to be my old Outlook data.

The contacts are critical to get reloaded.  The inbox is
important but not as important as my contacts.  Please
help!

Find the Personal Folders File (PST file) you were using on your old
installation.
Copy it to any location you want and configure your new installation to use
it.
Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup:
