File As gives unexpected results

Many of my contacts have alphabet soup after their names.
(MA, PhD, MD, CEBS, etc)
I take the letters out of the "File As" so it displays
LastName, FirstName.  But now the names are showing under
the alphabet soup, if they show at all.  I go to change
the "File As" field (back to the same LastName,
FirstName) and the field blanks. I have tried pressing
END, then tab to next field, pressing enter, both change
the "File As" field blank - that is the information is
removed.  If I click save & close with the cursor still
in the field I get a msg that the field is blank do I
want to save.

Is there a command line switch that will clean up the
contacts?  or someother way of getting the LastName,
FirstName to stay in the field and to sort by it?

This is a pretty hard post to follow. It is not clear what you are doing,
where and how you are trying to change the File As field, and where you are
trying to change the sort order. We don't even know what version of Outlook
you are using.
Any manual changes I make to my File As... fields are reflected immediately
in the sort order in both the Contacts Folder and the Address Book.
