when I imoort contacts from an excel spreadsheet using a named range, the
person name and company come in ok, but the email address, eg jan@aol.com
gives me just one seemingly random letter.  the mapping seems ok

I too am experiencing this problem, and have gotten no response to my
postings of the same.  The mapping is successful, but only the first
character of the email address is imported.  WIN XP, Office 2002.

I found a work-around for this problem.  I copied the Excel range to MS Word,
and saved as text only (tab delimited).  From Outlook I was able to import
the records perfectly.  I did have to use my Office installation disc to
install some sort of feature (can't remember now, what it was).
