I want to mail merge from Outlook 2002 to a small list of contacts that
are sorted by a "User defined field in folder." The "New letter to
contact" selection is grayed out and unavailable. Why? and how do I
perform this merge? (I can't do this sort from inside Word, can I?)

Wrong command. Instead, select the contacts, then choose Tools | Mail Merge
from Outlook's menu.

It really was simple, wasn't it. That helps a lot.
Thanks,
Gary
