I had Outlook 2002 installed on a new computer and had my old Outlook
contacts file saved, successfully, in contacts. When I sent a new email, the
Contacts folder was empty. I then had Outlook copy the contacts folder to
get the old addresses. Now there are two Contacts files when a new email is
prepared, but the first is empty. How do I erase it so Outlook will look for
addresses in the populated Contacts file?

Explain more clearly and in more detail what you really did. I can't follow
your descriptions here. It sounds to me like you simply failed to configure
your Outlook Address Book correctly. If so, read this:
