Sorry,
Operating from Machine 1, using file explorer, I located the PST file on
Machine 2. I right clicked, open with outlook. Outlook opened and the
messages arrived, no contacts. I went to Machine 1 and opened outlook after
closing outlook on machine 2 and saw the messages, but the contacts
disappeared.

Uh-oh. You cannot open PST files from Windows Explorer. You can only open
them from within Outlook itself with the File > Open command.
Have you tried to repair this file with the Inbox Repair Tool?
Do you back up your data?
