MS Office Forum / Outlook / Contacts / October 2004Why do unsaved/deleted addresses show when addressing email?
Why do email addresses that I never saved OR that I have erased, show when I go to have a name automatically appear on my mail? I use several different address books and the ones I use are not under general contacts and when I write an email, I use the ALT-K and a group will come up if I have several similar names or if only one, it will automatically use that one. But again, why does it show addresses that I have never saved or those that have been erased and what can I do to eliminate those addresses. Thanks so much! Version of Outlook? It sounds like you have autocomplete enabled - Tools, Options, Email options, advanced... suggest names. Isn't there a way that you can delete the ones that aren't relevant without turning this feature off? > Version of Outlook? And yes I do see the bottome portion of this section but that is not what I or the other person were asking. You guys should be fired!!!!!!! Autocomplete CacheThe autocomplete e-mail cache used by Outlook 2002/2003 is stored in a file with the extension *.nk2. Microsoft hasn't released an editor for the cache file, but a 3rd party cache viewer called OWTLOOK is available from http://www.dcs-imaging.com/products.htm. While the vast majority of users will have no need to view or edit the cache, since removing old addresses requires just the Del key (after selecting the entry using the arrow keys), some sites may have good business reasons for viewing or exporting the addresses contained in the cache file. It helps when the people we try to help ask clear and concise questions and do their homework before posting. (Your question was asked and answered hundreds of times over the past couple of years and a quick Google would find the answer in seconds.) Terri's problem - how to stop saving addresses not in the address book - is solved by disabling suggest names. You asked how to delete the ones not relevant without turning it off - that is done using the Delete key. Most people are satisfied deleting them as they pop up and owtlook is overkill. Some corps want to harvest the addresses their users send mail to or prepopulate the cache and owtlook is great for that. But... you didn't ask how to harvest or prepopulate the cache or how to mass delete addresses, just how to delete the ones not relevant. Your answer had nothing to do with this question. You're suggestion was to turn this feature off? Wow, did Gates teach you that himself? If all else fails just don't use it. Diane's answer was exactly right. The original poster wanted to use autoresolution not autocompletion, but instead autocompletion was interfering with that process. The solution is simply to turn off autocompletion so that autoresolution can be invoked exclusively. Her answer to you was to a different question entirely and was also completely correct. Neither one of you made it clear whether you were asking about autocompletion or autoresolution, but Diane made the right guess both times.
