Problem with Windows XP FAX Services

I have a strange problem after installing WinXP FAX services. I am running
XP MCE SP2 on a Dell XPS410 with all security and hotfixes done. I use Trend
Micro Internet Security 2007.

After re-booting,  the desktop comes up normally but I can't do anything for
several minutes with a number of applications such as IE6 or Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. These hang for several minutes. Eventually they will
run. Un-intstalling Fax Services cures the problem.

The FAX service does work just fine once up and running. I have tried  auto
answer off and automatic. Having the phone line connected to the modem makes
no difference. I didn't go into Outlook to configure anyhting there since I
do not use Outlook.

Process Explorer doesn't show any activity other System Idle Process during
the hang. Once whatever is hanging is done then I see changes and additions
to the Processes in Process Explorer.

I looked at the Microsoft Knowledge Base, also  Bruces Printing Pages and
Slipstick.com but didn't see any comments about this problem. A Google
search didn't come up with similar problems.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thank you

Rich

Rather a vague, convoluted story. Why did you suspect the Fax Service in the
first place? What made you think uninstalling it would help?
If I were you I'd be looking for more concrete steps to reproduce your
problem, error messages, and Event viewer. Trust me, no one has reported
anything like it, especially in this group, which is for Outlook.

I suspected it because it was the only change I had made. When I remove FAX
services the problem goes away.

There were no error messages but I'll look at the event viewer and logs.

Sorry about posting here. This seems to be a news group with active users.

Thank you.

I would post in the XP Fax group. Perhaps someone there has seen it. I would
still post a lot more detail that "it was the only change I made." That
would mean nothing to someone who wasn't watching what you were doing.

My Internet provider doesnt have an XP Fax group available. I'll do some
more digging. I found a number of error events logged oin the event viewer
to investigate.

Thank you again

What does that have to do with your Internet provider?
Use the Microsoft public news server. That's where you're posting, you know.

I just checked the Microsoft public news server. It has the same groups that
I have now. There is no specific  XP Fax group, the closest is
windowsxp.print_fax.

Thank you again

I solved the problem. I guess it was a print problem sort of.

There were two error messages in the Event Viewer with Fax Services enabled:
One for a Brother Print Spooler and one for Intel Quick Recovery. The
Spooler was still in Services even though I had uninstalled the Brother long
ago. I disabled the spooler and deleted all the lurking Brother files that
the un-instsller left behind. I disabled the Intel Quick Recovery.

No more hanging applications. Interesting that the problem and error logs
only occur with Fax Services enabled.

Thanks for the advice.
