I have several users using Outlook 2000 on an XP Professional SP2 machine to
contact an Exchange 2003 mail server.  Since installing SP2 on their desktop
machines their Outlook seems not to get notified about any new mail
received.  As soon as they click on another folder though, the mail appears.
Haven't been able to find anything in TechNet.  Does anyone here have any
ideas?

Thanks

Likely an issue with the firewall update SP2 includes.  New mail
notifications rely on UDP connectivity which may have ben altered by the
firewall update:

Thanks for that.  It did turn out to be the SP2 firewall blocking UDP.  I
also finally located a TechNet article on the subject (839226) although I
haven't been able to find that reference online, only on our subscriber
disks.

Essentially to fix it you have to add Outlook to the list of Exceptions in
the firewall.  I set the scope to the subnet of our mail server, applied the
policy and clients got their notifications again.
