Messages don't show unless resorted

I run Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT. All my workstations run
Outlook 2000. On 7 of these machines, when you open the
inbox, there are no messages that show in the window, but
in the task bar at the bottom it will say, for
example, "53 items, 22 unread". So you know there have to
be messages there, but you can't see them. The sort on
the inbox is by date received, descending. If you click
on the "Received" header to make the sort ascending, the
messages show up, or if you sort by sender or subject, the
messages show up. Click on received descending again,
they disappear.

My first thought is that this is a virus, but I haven't
been able to find anything about it on Symantec or
McAfee. Can anyone please help???!!?

Tracy,

It sounds like UDP packets are being blocked somewhere between the client
and the server. The following article provides a registry workaround to
confirm if this is the issue. If you apply the registry key to the client
and new email messages appear in the Inbox on a regular basis then the
problem is confirmed. The trick would be finding out why UDP packets are
getting blocked (firewall, router, personal firewall software on the client,
anti-virus on the client, etc.).

Greg,

Thanks for your response. I just want to confirm before I
start messing with the registry.

- Outlook has been operating normally on these machines up
until last week. Would the UDP packet problem come up
suddenly?
- There are new messages in the inbox, to see them you
just have to choose a different way to sort. Does this
still sound like UDP packets being blocked?

Tracy,

Instead of changing the sort order to "force" the messages to appear, what
happens if you select a different folder (like the Calendar folder)? Does
this force the messages to appear? If so, then it's got to be the UDP
problem.

Greg,

I went ahead and applied the changes to the registry of
one of the affected machines as directed in the white
paper you referenced. No change to the problem.

The only folder that is affected by this issue is the
inbox. When you go to another folder like Calendar, it
acts normally, but when you go back to inbox, the messages
will not appear when the sort is Receiving descending.
Click on Receiving ascending, all the messages appear,
click on descending again, they disappear.

Any other ideas on what could be causing this? Do you
think re-installing Outlook will help?

The problem might be a corrupted view. Try starting Outlook using the
/cleanviews switch. Start, Run, outlook.exe /cleanviews. That would
remove any custom views but might solve the problem.
