Is the Outlook 2003 rich client (that comes with an
Exchange 2003 CAL) compatible with Office 97 being on the
same machine?

I am having trouble finding information regarding Outlook
2003's compatibility with previous versions of Office
products.

Yes, but you won't be able use features like WordMail and mail merge that
depend on having matching versions of Outlook and Word.
