I am trying to understand why some contacts have embedded
objects, such as birthdays that show up in my calendar.
How can I stop this from happening.  Thanks in advance for
your help.

If you enter a value in the "Birthday" or "Anniversary" field on the
Contact item's Details tab, Outlook will create the corresponding
recurring event for that date in your Calendar.  I don't know of a way
around this except to either not use those fields or to delete the
Calendar events and corresponding shortcuts from your contacts after
they're created.
