I am setting up IMAP and would like to find a way to make messages disappear
from view when deleted.  I had hoped to do this with a filter.  If that can
be done I would want to also automate the purge on either starup or shutdown.
Any suggestions

Depends on version, with Outlook 2003 this is easy. Go to View || Arrange By
|| Current View || Select "Hide Messages Marked for Deletion" note you may
have to reapply the Reading Pane from the View Menu, as to your second
question I dont think that can be done (at least without some coding I would
imagine).
