Why can't I close Outlook and have the email reminder remain in my task bar?
Outlook must be opened and minimized in order to get the mail alerts??  With
other email clients I can close the program and the reminder alarms run in
the task bar.

Those other programs are running in the background.

If you want to remove Outlook from your ALT-TAB cycle as well as taking up a
spot on your valuable task bar real estate? RIGHT-CLICK on the Outlook icon
in the taskbar tray (by the time), choose HIDE WHEN MINIMIZED. Then minimize
Outlook.

You now have your desired result.
