I am importing all my pst files from my old laptop to my new.  I could not
get the cable connection to work, so I am doing it with a Cruzer.  The
frustrating thing is that when I import the files I cannot get them to import
directly in top the “default” folder (Contacts for example.)  They are
imported into a new set of Personal Folders.  I can copy them into the
default, but then they appear as a subfolder.  Any suggestions about how to
combine subfolders?  Alternatively, am I missing something basic in importing
PST files?

Importing is never the correct way to transfer Outlook data. Now you see
why.
Next time, just open the data file and copy what you need from it.
