My delete option does not work in Outlooks

When i try to delete the email in outlooks--I get a line thru it and it goes
to a lighter color but it stays.

Sounds like you're using an IMAP mail server. You've got to purge deleted
items for them to go away completely. There's a command for that (Purge
Deleted Messages) on the Edit menu when you're viewing the IMAP mailbox

When I exit Outlook it does not deleted the Deleted Messages folder. This has
recently begun happening. I have the option checked, but it does not work now.

So, what DOES happen?  What version of Outlook?  What account type?
