I have a gmail address rather than a new googlemail address.  The
configuration of the acct within office xp outlook works up to a point but
the send test message function is not successful.  Can anyone help.

Have you enabled your gmail account for POP access?  That's something you
need to do on the gmail web site.

Yes i have followed the instruction witnin gmail.  I have noted that when the
settings are saved to allow pop access, the setting does not show up the next
time you return to settings page.  The three options are still available with
no indication that one has been selected.

Since I don't use gmail, someone else will have to suggest something else.
