I am running Vista Business, Outlook 2007, in a non-exchange environment. I
can receive but can't send emails through Outlook using my gmail account. I
have checked and double checked ALL setting possible, shut down every
instance of antivirus and firewall in the task manager and I am still
receiving a time-out error when trying to send a test message - I get the
same timeout message if I "Test Account Settings" or send a manual message.
What's the skinny?
If you are in a corporate environment access to outside SMTP servers could
have been blocked by the corporate firewall. Contact your admin to verify
this.

No corporate domain. This is a stand alone box running the MAPS version of
Vista Business and Outlook 2007. I subscribe to a local ISP (Charter -
cable) for my internet service. Any other ideas? It's incredibly frustrating
that I can't use Outlook b/c I love the 07 version...

Have you enabled POP in your Gmail account settings?

Did you resolve the Outlook2007/Vista (MAPS) gmail problem?
As I have the same issue.

Yes i did. I deleted the account from Outlook and instead of setting it up
manually I let it run through the automatic setup. After doing this it
worked! Only difference I could find was that it set the SMTP (Outgoing)
server to port 587, whereas before I was using what google (and microsoft for
that matter) suggests on their gmail help. Hope that helps.
