I just upgraded to new hardware which uses Vista Home Edition.  My old system
used W2000 and Outlook 2000 (SP-3 9.0.0.6627).  I know exactly where my old
.pst files are in the old system.  How do I get the old Outlook .pst files
into the Vista Windows mail format.  When I tried to use the Wizard in Vista
it said it could not import MAPI client files.  Help for this migration would
be appreciated. (purchasing Office for Vista is not a reasonable option, Can
I load Outlook 2000 onto Vista as an alternative?)

Thank you.

Outlook and Windows Mail/Outlook Express are not related to each other. On
your old system you'll first need to use Import from within Outlook Express
to convert your mail database from pst-format to dbx-format. Windows Mail is
the successor of Outlook Express and can read dbx-files correctly.

Running Outlook 2000 on Windows Vista is not supported but is possible with
some limitations like that you must run it in Corporate/Workgroup Mode. If
you do not consider an update to Office 2007, I would recommend using
Windows Mail instead of the outdated Outlook 2000.

It is a shame that Microsoft does not support conversion between its own
Outlook versions. But indeed, Roady, it is a piece of cake to do it over
Outlook Express! I started that program after 7 years of 'normal' outlook, it
found and recognized the pst file and suggested conversion. Where the dbx
files are stored is not said then, but they can be found. Each folder becomes
a dbx of its own.
Then starting Windows Mail allows for importing these dbx files. Great stuff!

I saved Eu 165 because I did not have to buy a Vista-compatible Outlook.
Windows Mail is just as good. Thanks for the hint!
