I recently got an updated pc - it like its predecessor runs windows xp pro
and outlook 03.

I just copied my old outlook.pst over the old one and I have everything --
EXCEPT ONE THING

I can't use the search address book window - I've changed from Outlook
Address Book to contacts (I have 687 contacts) and I get nothing - there is a
blank window for Contacts and a note "No entries in this address Book" for
Outlook Address Book

how can I correct my screw up?

Never overwrite one PST with another.  You've corrupted your mail profile.

if you can see the contacts when you press the to button, you need to reset
the search index.
