running outlook 2k3 on xp pro sp 2, exchanger 2k3 sp2. also, sophos antivirus.
infrequently and seemingly inconsistently (two words all troubleshooters
love to hear), a folder called "spam mail" gets automatically created in my
mailbox. in the last month and a half, it's happened twice. in addition, some
messages are placed in that folder. the messages placed there are automatic
messages that I receive daily.
interesting and puzzling characteristics:
- the automatic messages that have been placed in the “spam mail” folder
originate from 2 different sources, so I feel I can eliminate the source as
causing the folder creation.
- the automatic messages normally appear in my inbox.
- the scenario doesn’t remain “on”. that is, I can see that on 5/1 there
were 3 messages placed in this newly created “spam mail” folder. however, on
5/2 these same automatic messages resume being placed in my inbox. it’s as if
this scenario was turned on for a day, then turn off.
- I tried simply deleting the “spam mail” folder. it seemed to work, but
then was created again for reasons that escape me.
- I don’t have any outlook rules that would cause the folder creation.
thanks in advance for your input.

Outlook doesn't do this simply because it can't as it isn't a native
function. Most likely your security suite or a corporately managed security
suite is doing this. Consult the documentation for it or ask your mail
admin.
