Restore from backup

I managed to backup my XP before it completely died. I now have a new
XP Home system and I've reinstalled Office XP. I don't want to do a
full restore. Which folder in the Windows system is my Outlook
information in? (Inbox, Contacts, and other folders, Internet
connectivity settings, etc.)

The pst contains all data, eg mail contacts etc. However account settings
are not stored within it.

OK, I've found the .pst on my new system and on my backup drive.
However, after restoring the backed up version I find that the file is
inaccessable to me. I can't move it to the folder where it belongs.
And I'm the administrator on this machine.

Any ideas?

Depends how you set about 'restore' and what exactly you mean by this.
If by backup of the pst you mean a simple copy of the pst; Copy the pst to
any location on the hd, ensure read only is off, then in OL File/open and
browse to pst.
Ensure you do not overwrite any existing pst
The pst doesn't have to be at any specific location on the hd.

I used the Windows backup utility that I found on my Windows CDs.

Thanks for the tip on read only; I will check that.

I backed up the pst with the NT backup utility that came with my XP
CDs. It was part of a complete backup. Now I'm denied access to the
folder that the pst is in. I can't seem to restore an individual file
without restoring the entire path that it was backed up with.

It maybe that you need to take ownership of the Folder, see win help.
You should be able, in any case, to restore the entire folder to a different
location on your current hd.
Once done you can move the pst to wherever. Do not overwrite any existing
pst. It is not neccessary for the pst to be at any specific location on the
hd.
