Outlook set to connect with Exchange server, how to reset that to.

My outlook was set to work with an Exchange server before. Now I want to
change that just work with normal pop3 mail account.  How can I do that.  
Since I can on longer connect to exchange server, when I open outlook, I keep
getting "can't open default mail account“ error message and can't contiune.

From the mail applet in Control panel, open your profile and delete the
exchange account or create a new profile that doesn't have the exchange
account.
