Out of Office and VPN

I am using Outlook XP with Exchange 2003 on a 2003 domain.

My Out of office work great in my LAN.

When my sales team users are connecting thru VPN (L2TP-IPsec) they are able
to configure their Out of Office assistant.
But it does not work.  If theyconnect to my Office with a VPN connection,
and I setup an Out of Office, no one is receiving my OoO message.
But it does work great internally.
Note that my users (remote and local) are not using any offline profile.
They are "directly" connected to the Exchange server.

Thanks for any help

OK.

I'm confused by "you" and "they" usage here - they're connecting and setting
OOO themselves, and it is not firing off for internal or Internet mail at
all? And there's no PST file use at all?

For the remote users, I strongly suggest that they sync to an offline file
and work offline by default w/scheduled auto syncs in the background - much
more stable.

No PST are being used.

They are working with Offline mode.  Then they connect to the VPN to
synchronize.

(sorry about the "I" and "they")

they are able to create an OoO rules but it does not work.  No one is
receiving the message saying that the person is absent.

any thought?

Thanks

I'd wager that your Exchange server is configured not to allow Automatic
Replies to the Internet.  That setting is either in your Internet Mail
Connector or the SMTP Service (if I recall correctly) depending upon what
version of Exchnage you're using.

....OOO doesn't require that autoreply to the Internet be enabled - OOO to
the internet is a separate tickbox :-)

I beleive that Lanwench is right.

Well, that's usually a safe bet since I've rarely known her not to be
right.  In this case I sensed another option based upon what you were saying,
though.
Easy enough to test; have them connect via the VPN, then set their OOF
settings and see if they work.

I was wrong once, but only because I thought I'd been wrong about something
and it turned out I was right the first time. <g>

Agreed. Good isolation test...

Can you log into their mailbox in Outlook on your LAN and get it to run that
way? If not, there's a larger problem....anyone else having OOO problems?

And have you confirmed that your Exchange server is configured to allow
auto-replies to the Internet?

I don't think auto-replies to the internet has anything to do with OoO

Of course it does.  What do you think an OOO message is?  :-)

In fact, disabled AutoReplies to the Internet is possibly the most common
reason why we see OOO fail to the Internet.  Common symptom is that it
works internally but not to the world.

If they're working offline, that's probably the culprit. Maybe they can just
use OWA for this.

I will give OWA a try but I don't undestand what is the difference between
being connected to VPN (not offline) and using OWA. (For my OoO issue)

Thanks

I've never tried setting OOO while working offline, but I do suspect it's
the issue. If they open Outlook & choose "connect" (even just as a temporary
test) does it make a difference?

OK - if they set it in OWA, does it work? Try to isolate whether it's
working offline /via Outlook /VPN. Try logging in as one of the users in
Outlook on your LAN and see if it works then. If it works there, in OWA or
in Outlook connected directly on the network, there's something funky with
their VPN/offline use.
