Hoping someone can help with this....

Even though I specify the smtp servers I want to use for outgoing email all my
messages get routed directly through AOL (via smtp-loh03.proxy.aol.com) when
I'm on dialup.

I first noticed this was happening when I got bounces c/o AOL Postmaster on
email that should have gone through my hosting company's server....

This is a bit of a problem, it's not only slow to send, but AOL's mail servers
have a habit of getting blacklisted.

Last I new AOL used a proprietary mail set-up and didn't even have an smtp
server.... Now everything is being sucked into it (in the good old days AOhell
limited itself to blackholing incoming email sent to it's customers from the
internet...).

Even the "X-Apparently-From:" field features my AOL screenname on all my email,
although I suppose this is to be expected if it's going through their mail
server. Identical problem with Opera's email app. Perhaps I should go back to
using Eudora or Express? I'd prefer not to have to do that, although I don't
remember them having this problem before.

Could be AOL is intercepting connections on port 25?

Come to think of it I had a lot of interrupted connections using Outlook
Express (didn't suspect AOL was to blame at the time), although when email was
able to get out, it went through the specified servers, never an AOL proxy.

Many isps do intercept/block port 25 I don't know if aol does. AFAIK, it
didn't in the past but it may now that it offers IMAP/SMTP. There is also no
real reason for AOL servers to be blacklisted, except by vigilantes or
elitists. They have a good antispam policy in their TOS that should keep
them off all black lists.

http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/online.htm#aol will answer some of
your AOL Q's wrt propriety services - see the faq link at the end for more.

Thanks for the info. I just got a 554 from mail.com, although I'm sure AOL
returns the courtesy (figuratively speaking, of course).

Are you sending through mail.com SMTP servers to aol or from aol to
mail.com? I'm pretty sure mail.com is on a lot of RBLs - I know I block
outblaze.com because of spam (and mail.com uses their servers).
