Outlook 2003

I want to play a custom sound when a new message arrives.  That's the
easy part ... here's where it gets tricky.

I have "play sound when message arrives" checked in Outlook.
I have the custom wav file set up in control panel > sounds.

When a new email arrives my custom sound plays .. then 2 seconds later
the DEFAULT MS "new message" sound plays.

Even if I uncheck "play sound when message arrives" in Outlook.
AND set my control panel > sounds to play no sound at all..

New email arrives and the default MS message sound plays!

It's driving me absolutely crazy!!  No rules are set to play a sound
and I can't fix this for the life of me .. HELP!

Interesting.  Do you have the latest service packs for Outlook installed?
(http://officeupdate.microsoft.com to check)
