I can see the replies. First, it was posted just once in another
newsgroup, and second, the reply I got there was no help. I just
thought I might do better by posting a more detailed description in
the correct group where I might get an answer from some one who
actually knows how to solve the problem.

You'll need to post a more accurate description of what you actually did.
Had you follow the correct instructions, you would have had no problem. Nor
is there an "import\export" method that is ever correct.
Re-read the instructions for migrating your data:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx
Then re-read and follow the instructions for configuring the Outlook Address
Book after you do:

There is a program called BackRex that transfers all the settings from one
computer to the other. The trial version is good enough for just Outlook
settings.
The feature you are looking for (find and autocomplete in the To box) is in
a file called Outlook.nk2 in the C:\Documents and
Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder
