His problem is that if the message no longer exists, you can't delete the
headers from Outlook. I eventually got rid of my orphaned headers, but I
have no idea exactly how I did it - I think it used remote mail and syncing
a few times finally cleared out the orphaned headers.

Can you delete the orphaned headers by setting Outlook into Offline mode,
unloading and restarting Outlook, and then delete the headers while still in
offline mode?
