Win xp home w/sp2, office 2003 pro (all updates downloaded),  Zone
Alarm Free, AVG anti virus/

Almost every email I get comes in duplicates!

Now I KNOW I'm doing something wrong, because this is a clean install
on a new computer.

Was using EXACT same configuration on old machine and got no
duplicates (except from one server).

Obviously in 'set up process' I checked something wrong, yet haven't
been able to find it!

I need to fix this immediately, and NO, do not want to PAY for a third
party (unknown) add in to do it.  Which is what you get referred too
when you search help...

Doesn't Microsoft office have a 'fix' for this???

Have you unchecked the option to have your AV check incoming/outgoing mail?

It is a useless feature since incoming mail is checked by your real-time on
access scanner when opened and if you are relying on outgoing scanning to
catch infected mails, you are about 2 steps too late.  You are already
infected so anything going out will carry what you already have active on
your entire OS, not just mail.

Just did!  Guess the AV default is to have all this on.  I disabled
it, so now we shall see...

Well, that didn't work.  AV email scanning is totally disabled, and
I'm still getting duplicate email.

(btw, on prior machine, AV email scanning was ON and wasn't getting
duplicates.)

Microsoft tells me I have ALL updates to everything.  The above link
is to an article, and I could never find a link in it to download this
'hotfix'.

Still getting duplicates  BUT I do notice they seem to not happing in
INBOX, but when RULES have been applied and they are sent to another
folder (Not junk or delete folders).  Ideas???

You have to call Microsoft and request a hotfix.  That's explained in every
article that describes a hotfix.  None are available for download.

This is because you did not include the "stop processing more rules" action
on your rules.

And how would that cause duplicate emails???  Or prevent them?

When a message arrives, Outlook applies each rule in turn to see if the
conditions match.  Supposed a rule's condition matches a message and that
rule caused the messages to be moved to a folder.  Outlook does so.  Now, if
the "stop processing more rules" action is not on that rule, Outlook retains
the original message in the Inbox and continues with the next rule to see if
its conditions, too, match.  This continues until all rules have been
processed.  Outlook stops processing, but you now have a copy left in the
Inbox in addition to the one that was moved.  If, instead, Outlook had seen
the "stop processing more rules" action on the rule that matched, Outlook
ended processing at that point and would have deleted the Inbox copy because
the rule said "move" and you would not have a duplicate left over.

This worked!!!!  I went through all my 'rules' and marked each "stop
processing more rules".  Then I watched for a couple of days.  NO MORE
DUPLICATES!

Why oh why is this not just a 'default' setting???  And with all the
probs this caused people, why isn't this answer readily available in
help files, online articles, etc???

The MVP'S here should just auto send this 'solution' every time
someone asks for help w/duplicate emails...

Thank You so VERY much!!!

Duplicate mails are caused by many problems, not JUST the "stop processing
more rules."  See the Microsoft Knowledge Base Library where there are
articles about duplicates being caused by too short polling intervals,
anti-virus or firewall applications scanning your incoming/outgoing mail,
etc.

It would be nice if there were only ONE problem that caused duplicate emails
but this is the real world where Murphy's law rules the land.

LOL, and all this time I though Microsoft ruled!

No, Murphy gets around a lot more than BillG.

Well, I just tried this on one folder, and it didn't make a bit of
difference.  Got duplicates...even though I 'ticked' the stop
processing more rules' action on that specific rule!
