Outlook 2007, just migrated from outlook 2000, and I cannot find any way to
group the contacts personal contacts, contacts from work, from university,
etc..
It seems like only categories are available and I cannot understand how it
works.
somebody please help me.

Click on "Contacts" in the left-hand pane. It should show you all your
contacts. About halfway down on the left side, there's an option to "Add New
Group".

That won't accomplish what the OP is after.

I'm guessing you used Outlook 2000 in internet mode. It was more like OE -
you'll need to use categories now. Assign a category to each contact and use
the group by category view.

They are called Distribution Lists. They work fine on Outlook 2007. (As well
as in previous versions, that is)

Stay AWAY from Distribution Lists as they are not reliable. Read some of
Russ Valentine's posts about the numerous problems they have always had.

except in OE you can use groups as separate 'address books' and choose
individual names to address messages. In Outlook you need to send to the
entire DL. Outlook 2007 allows you to expand DLs to delete names, but its a
PITA to send to one person on the DL.
