Outlook hasn't used a PAB file in years. It is unlikely you were.
Everything sounds normal here. What is your question?
Perhaps you are confusing autocompletion with autoresolution.

Russ,
thanks for the tip. I googled and found
http://www.ingressor.com/autocompletetips.htm which
explained the difference.
So I would expect that the reason Outlook completes
addresses for recipients I have been in recent contact
with is because it is using autocompletion.
So my problem seems to be that autoresolution is not
working.
I went to tools/options/email/advanced email options' and
'automatic name checking' and 'suggest names while
completing To etc' are both checked.
Any further thoughts?

What is your evidence that autoresolution is not working?
What is not happening that you think should?

Russ,
if I am creating an email and I start to type into the
'To:' box a persons name, such as Fr.. for Fred Smith then
I expect Outlook to look up the address book and offer
fred.smith@google.com for instance. I get no offer of
matching email addresses. If I click on the address book
icon beside the 'To:' then I can see and select an email
address to use.
But from your questions I am wondering if autoresolution
is only available in Outlook Express?

You are still confusing autoresolution with autocompletion. Outlook does
both. Here's a primer:

Superb primer, now I have it. But I wonder why did
Microsoft not use the method used in Outlook Express which
is certainly not confusing.
So problem sorted, thanks for giving me the link Russ,

Two completely different and unrelated products. I suspect they figured
Outlook users might want both options.

It takes a while for the cache to become populated
