I stumbled across the DSOFILE.dll today, and have been playing with it a
bit, learning what I can and cannot get.

What I'd really love to do is figure out how long a slideshow is, given an
arbitrary PPT or PPS file. I can get the slide count, but is there any way
of getting a duration (either total or per slide) thru this interface?

If not, is there any other way to programmatically get the duration of a
given PPT/PPS slideshow without having to have PowerPoint installed?

No. You need PPT to achieve this.
